Why hire a lobbyist?
Lobbyists are professionals with a knowledge of the way government works both local and national. They also understand how semi state and state organisations and departments work. They advocate work on behalf of individuals and organisations to influence political and legislative decisions.
Professional lobbyists will have a good working relationship with policymakers, giving them at times a unique access to key government officials and influencers. This is why business organisations, firms and individuals will engage a lobbyist rather than lobbying decision makers on their own.
Deciding on engaging with a lobbyist
There are 3 main areas to looks at
- Qualifications
- Experience
- Suitability
Qualifications
Understand the companies experience and expertise. Make sure they are knowledgeable in the area you will need them to engage with. Look at their current and previous clients.
Experience
How long are they in the game. How experienced is the firm? Are they specialists in certain areas or have a broad knowledge base. Make sure to reference check.
Suitability
The only way to make sure is to have that coffee or lunch ! A face to face meeting will make the decision a lot easier and will ensure that most importantly you make the right decision. Most lobbyists will seek to engage on a retainer – this is a no no. In the first instance, once you engage on your project, make sure they deliver in full for you and that you are fully satisfied with the outcome. Then a discussion can happen on a retainer/contractual agreement.
Lobbyists have effective strategies for staying up to date on relevant policy changes and developments that may impact your interests.
They’ll have their finger on the pulse of what’s going on in the political world
